Garage door types: a practical guide

Compare up-and-over, roller, sectional and side-hinged garage doors by how they open, the space they need and questions to ask before choosing.

The right door depends on the opening, the space inside and outside, how you use the garage, and the fitting arrangement. A product name alone cannot tell you whether a door will suit your opening; manufacturers use different frames, tracks and clearances. Start by measuring, then ask an installer to confirm the selected model at a survey.

The main types

Up-and-over doors are one panel that tilts out and up. Canopy and retractable gear describe different lifting arrangements, so check how far the panel projects and the maker’s headroom and side-room requirements. See canopy versus retractable.

Roller doors wind into a roll above the opening. They leave the ceiling and much of the garage side walls available, but need space for the roll and its guides. Check box/headroom dimensions for the exact model: do not assume one roller door’s allowance applies to another. Read roller versus sectional.

Sectional doors use hinged horizontal panels that travel up and under the ceiling. They do not swing out like an up-and-over door, but tracks and springs use ceiling and side space. The required clearances depend on the track and spring option; the Hörmann fitting guide illustrates how they vary by fitting position.

Side-hinged doors open like a pair of leaves. They can be useful where you want pedestrian access without raising a large door, provided there is room for the leaves to swing and the floor and frame suit the product.

Materials and insulation

Steel, aluminium, timber and glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) are available across different product ranges, but not every material is offered in every door type. Compare the manufacturer’s stated finish, maintenance instructions, construction and insulation figures for the specific door. A headline panel or section value may not describe the complete installed door.

How to narrow the choice

Measure the structural opening, headroom, side room and garage depth. Note obstructions such as lights, pipes, shelves and a parked car. Decide whether you need clear ceiling storage, everyday pedestrian access or an automated door, then compare only models whose published fitting data covers your arrangement. Our sizing guide and door size checker help organise those measurements; the installer’s survey confirms the order size.
